ICLEI Global Governance

Governed by the ICLEI Charter put in place by its founding Members, our mandate is to build an active and committed membership of local governments.

ICLEI Council
The association is democratically governed by its Members through a global Council. The Council represents ICLEI’s global membership by way of representative democracy. It is the supreme decisionmaking and oversight body of the global association and is composed of the members of nine Regional Executive Committees. The Council elects the Global Executive Committee, approves the six-year Strategic Plan, which is updated every three years, and receives the Corporate Report.

ICLEI Global Executive Committee
The Global Executive Committee (GexCom) is the representation of the members at global level. The GexCom is composed of nine regional representatives and up to six appointed members that represent portfolios of ICLEI work streams.

ICLEI Strategic Plan

Through the Strategic Plan, ICLEI's membership sets the direction for the association's policies and programs. According to the ICLEI Charter, the Strategic Plan is adopted by the ICLEI Council at the Council Meeting, which takes place every three years. The Strategic Plan has a six-year scope but is revised and renewed every three years.
