Earth Hour City Challenge 2015-2016

After successfully supporting 6 eligible South African cities to take part in the Earth Hour City Challenge 2013-2014, as well as Tanzanian local governments in 2014-2015, ICLEI Africa is extending this year's competition to local governments in Rwanda. Participating cities report their actions, commitments and performance to the carbonn Climate Registry (cCR). Capacity building initiatives and marketing materials are also made available to participating cities in the region to further their sustainability initiatives.

Green Building resources released for use by municipalities and developers

ICLEI Africa is delighted to share a number of brand new resources designed to support developers and municipalities in South African and further afield to green urban infrastructure and buildings . The resources were designed through the Urban-LEDS (Urban Low Emission Development Strategies) project, with the expert assistance of MCA Urban and Environmental Planners, Steadfast Greening and Conscious Property Solutions.

New video showcases Doornkop off-grid solar solution in Steve Tshwete Municipality

Situated 11km out of the Middleburg town centre, Doornkop was one of the first successful land claimants under the Restitution of Land Act and is now embracing the solar revolution. As part of the Urban-LEDS project being implemented in Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, ICLEI Africa partnered with Doornkop to support them in their dream to become solar powered.

Unveiling of Grootkloof Environmental Education Centre

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) is pleased to announce the unveiling of the Grootkloof Environmental Education Centre, situated in the Van der Kemp’s Kloof Nature Reserve in Port Elizabeth.
