Urban Development Experts

ICLEI Africa seeks to hire several urban development experts to join our dynamic team of professionals in the fields of urban sustainability. Successful incumbents must have a strong technical background and keen interest in sustainable urban development and its practical implementation in Africa and/or internationally. Proven experience in the following areas is required:


(a) Development, implementation and mainstreaming of sustainable urban development policy, strategy and action plans, with specialised skills and experience in one or more of the following fields:
Green and blue urban infrastructure • biodiversity • nature-based urban solutions • energy and climate change • integrated urban water management and sanitation • planning •
(b) Design, implementation and management of large multi-year projects with proven experience of working in, and leading, multi-disciplinary project teams.
(c) Business development, promotion and development of strategic partnerships.


Position specific requirements:

  • A Relevant Master’s degree, or equivalent recognised qualification.
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant post-graduate working experience, at least 3 of which at project management level.
  • A delivery and results oriented person that works well in teams as well as independently.
  • Ability to be flexible about work responsibilities and thrive under pressure within a dynamic and highly creative working environment.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in liaising effectively with high level officials and organisations, as well as academic and technical experts.
  • Innovative individual who can think on his or her feet and harness well established networks to build the company’s good reputation.
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work comfortably and independently, thriving within multiple teams in a highly dynamic and creative environment.
  • Willingness to travel extensively in Africa and internationally.
  • Valid code B driver’s license, with one year’s practical driving experience.
    South African resident / valid work permit.
    Knowledge of the African and global geo-political context as well as proficiency in French, Swahili, Portuguese or another African language will be an added advantage.
