• Exceptional project management, leadership, communication, writing, presentation & analytical skills

• Must have a passion for, and willingness to, travel extensively locally and internationally

• Must be able to start on or before the first working day of January 2017

Position 1: Senior Programme Manager: Cities Biodiversity Center (4-year contract position)

ICLEI Africa seeks to hire an established technical expert and experienced senior manager to join our dynamic Senior Management Team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the strategic management and development of ICLEI’s growing global biodiversity programme and its projects and initiatives conducted through our global Cities Biodiversity Center (CBC).

The candidate must have a sound technical background and keen interest in nature-based solutions for urban resilience, urban planning and biodiversity management within the context of the CBD and other relevant global frameworks. He / she must possess a broad and in-depth skill set coupled with extensive experience in urban policy, legal, governance, business development and financing instruments to deliver integrated nature-based solutions for cities and their communities.

Additional areas of responsibility:

• Management of multiple projects, teams and initiatives
• Project and programme design, development, management and reporting
• Management of new and existing strategic partnerships
• Technical leadership within the CBC
• Capacity building and mentoring of internal and external teams
• Strategic support to the office of the ICLEI Africa Regional Director

Position specific requirements

• A Relevant Master’s degree, or equivalent recognized qualification
• Minimum of 10 years relevant post-graduate working experience, at least 7 of which at executive / senior management level


Position 2: Professional Officer: Urban Development (several contract positions ranging from 2 to 4 years)

ICLEI Africa seeks to hire several urban development experts to join our dynamic team of professionals in the fields of urban sustainability. Successful incumbents must have a strong technical background and keen interest in sustainable urban development and its practical implementation in Africa and /or internationally, coupled with proven experience in the following areas:
(a) Development, implementation and mainstreaming of sustainable urban development policy, strategy and action plans related, with specialized skills and experience in one or more of the following fields:
Integrated urban water management and sanitation • planning • nature-based urban solutions • urban risk management and resilience • green and blue urban infrastructure • energy and climate change • financing mechanisms for urban development • resource economics • sustainable development

(b) Project design, implementation and management with proven experience of working in, and leading, multi-disciplinary project teams

(c) Business development, promotion and development of strategic partnerships

Position specific requirements
• A Relevant Master’s degree, or equivalent recognized qualification
• Minimum of 5 years relevant post-graduate working experience, at least 3 of which at project management level


Position 3: Head: Finance and Governance (HFG) (initial 3-year contract position)

The HFG will provide a full spectrum of hands-on financial and governance services as a member of a dynamic management team, responsible for all financial and project reporting functions related to strategic financial management, project planning, project budgeting, project cash flows etc.

This individual must have a passion for detailed financial project management and reporting, coupled with:

a) In-depth skills and experience in the preparation of activity based project budgets, cash flow forecasts, scenario planning, management reports, board reports and budgets

b) Highly advanced and in-depth skills coupled with extensive experience in MS Excel

c) Proven ability to

• use the Pastel Accounting software package
• prepare, update and report on detailed cash flow requirements of individual and consolidated projects
• prepare individual and consolidated project documentation and reports in accordance with contracts and legislative requirements
• interact successfully with colleagues, donors, partners, suppliers etc.
• multi-task, work under pressure, independently, meticulously and accurately, often on a multi-currency basis and in collaboration with other staff as required.

Position Specific Requirements:

* A tertiary level accounting qualification (B Com degree or equivalent Accounting / Management Accounting / Costing qualification)

* Professional membership of a widely recognized professional accounting institution e.g. the South African Institute of Professional Accountants.

* Minimum of 10 years post-qualification experience, at comparable level of the advertised position with similar / same responsibilities

* Proven experience in financial management and reporting related to grants and international donor projects would be an added advantage

Position 4: Events Manager

ICLEI Africa seeks to hire an exceptionally well experienced, qualified and dynamic events manager. Applicants should be able to work independently and as part of diverse teams and ensure successful events and conferences of international standard.

Areas of responsibility will include, but not be limited to:

• Event planning & logistics
• Event branding & promotion
• Managing invitation database & online bookings
• Managing budgets
• Event reporting
• Ensuring protocol is followed at high-level events
• Liaison with high-level stakeholders
• Exhibition space logistics
• Negotiation of contracts with venues, co-hosts and sponsorships
• Aligning events to overall business strategy

The candidate will manage ICLEI Africa and ICLEI’s Cities Biodiversity Center’s regular and ad hoc events, including the bi-annual pan-African Local Climate Solutions 4 Africa Congress and the global Urban Nature Symposium. They will work closely with ICLEI’s communications office and relevant technical teams, external partners and contractors. This position also entails the management of city delegations to internal and external global and regional events.

Essential skills
The successful incumbent must have a passion for excellence in connecting people and creating world-class, cutting edge learning and exchange platforms for diverse participants and partners.
