Professional Officer: Urban Development (3-year fixed contract)


The successful candidate must have a strong technical background, keen interest in urban development and its practical implementation in Africa, and proven experience in the following areas:

  • Development and implementation of urban sustainability policy with specialised skills and experience in more than one of the following fields: development and sector planning • sustainable infrastructure • climate change • local government management and/or financing
  • Creative design, management and implementation of urban development projects
  • Stakeholder engagement, strategic partnerships, business development and resource mobilisation


Candidates should be delivery and results-orientated, as well as have a strong local government orientation and focus.


Requirements:

  • Relevant Master’s degree or equivalent qualification, preferably in an urban studies / development field, and
  • At least 3 years relevant post-graduate work experience in (or directly with) a local / subnational government in Africa.
  • Excellent command of Microsoft Office applications, especially project management and excel applications.

 

Professional Officer: Development Financing and City-Business Cooperation (3-year fixed contract)


The successful candidate must have a strong technical background and proven ability to support the conceptualisation and coordination of city-business cooperation initiatives, as well as the advancement of ICLEI’s work on urban transitions in Africa. The position includes acquisition and implementation of projects and events, and strengthening strategic partnerships with the private sector and international development finance institution (DFI) partners.


Requirements:

  • Relevant Master’s degree or equivalent qualification, covering fields such as economics, business administration, public finance, urban innovation and start-ups, and/or DFI mobilisation
  • At least 3 years relevant post-graduate work experience in one of the fields mentioned;
  • Demonstrated experience and interest in innovative finance solutions, project development and business development
  • Excellent command of Microsoft Office applications, especially financial applications.

 



Requirements for both positions unless otherwise specified:


Both positions require a proactive, organised and strong strategic thinking individual with the ability to keep a good overview of complex tasks, and who has a talent for priority setting, networking and project development with partners

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in multiple teams in a highly dynamic and creative environment, often engaging directly with high level political leadership, academic and technical experts, international organisations and the private sector on behalf of ICLEI

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent written, presentation and verbal communication skills
  • Valid code B driving license
  • South African resident/valid work permit
  • Must have a passion for, and willingness to, travel extensively locally and internationally
  • Knowledge of the African geo-political context and proficiency in French, Portuguese or Swahili will be added advantages.
