Sustainable transport and mobility

Knowledge Sharing Portal

Creating sustainable transportation solutions is one of the greatest challenges facing cities today, but also a great opportunity for the low-carbon development of cities. African cities are urbanising rapidly, and with this comes increasing demand for safe and efficient transport to link the growing urban population to economic opportunities. Currently, congestion hampers the movement of people and goods in many African cities and hinders the socio-economic development that these cities so desperately require. It is thus essential that innovative and sustainable means of transporting people around cities is developed, particularly when one considers the influence that transport has in contributing to climate change; nearly one-third of global CO2 emissions come from the transportation of people and goods. Sustainable urban mobility promotes the shift from private cars and trucking to different modes of public transport and interventions, like bicycle and pedestrian lanes, electric vehicles, car sharing and rail freight. Fortunately, solutions exist, with many African cities pioneering innovative ways to transport residents in a sustainable and efficient manner.

ICLEI Africa and WWF continue to work with network and member cities in Africa to explore and promote such solutions. We have created a knowledge sharing portal providing free access to the latest resources pertaining to sustainable transport within Africa, as well as lessons and case studies from around the world. We hope you find the portal valuable. If you would like to comment or have resources uploaded to the site, please contact ICLEI Africa at e-mail: iclei-africa@remove-this.iclei.org.

Ecomobility is a term used to describe travel through integrated, socially inclusive, and environmentally friendly transport options, including and integrating walking, cycling, public transport and other climate and people friendly innovative modes of transport. By enabling citizens and organizations to access goods, services, and information in a sustainable manner, ecomobility supports citizens’ quality of life, increases travel choices, and promotes social cohesion.
