ICLEI is a membership association, of subnational governments and local government associations that have made a unique commitment to sustainable development. ICLEI offers subnational governments and their national and regional associations Full Membership in the ICLEI Council, with powers to govern the organization internationally. ICLEI is a democratic organization, with each Member holding a position on the Council, where they can establish the priorities and direction for ICLEI through the adoption of the Strategic Plan. Members also elect representatives to serve on the ICLEI Executive Committee, which oversees the implementation of the Strategic Plan and ICLEI operations.
ICLEI also offers non-voting Associate Partnership status to state and national government agencies, non-profit and non-governmental organizations, and individuals who wish to be involved in the organization's on-going efforts.
Membership rates are based upon the population of the local authority and its national per capita income. The payment of dues is made on an annual basis. For information on Membership Fees, please see the African Fee Structure page:
Full Membership in ICLEI is offered to local governments and associations of local governments. Full Members of the Council have the power to elect the ICLEI Executive Committee, revise the ICLEI Charter, and establish policy direction for the organization. Other benefits of Full Membership include participation in ICLEI campaigns and projects, and reduced prices on ICLEI publications. Membership rates are based upon the population of the local government and its gross national income. The payment of dues is made on an annual basis.
ICLEI offers Associate Partnerships to State and National Governments and their departments, non-profit and non-governmental organizations, and individuals. Associate Partnership benefits include discounted access to tools, access to E-news and discounted access to global publications, the opportunity to network with peers, reduced rates for conferences and listings on the ICLEI global website. Associate Partners do not have power to elect the ICLEI Executive Committee, revise the ICLEI Charter, or establish policy direction for the organization. Associate Partners’ yearly dues are based upon type of organization and gross national income per capita.
