C40 & Siemens City Climate Leadership Awards

On 4 September C40 and Siemens announced ten winners of the City Climate Leadership Awards. 29 cities were nominated as finalists, including two ICLEI Africa member cities, Johannesburg and Lagos, both of whom will be showcasing their pioneering activities at the LOCS 2013 event to be held in Dar es Salaam.

“The fight against climate change will be decided in cities,” said Stefan Denig, Head of Corporate Communications, Siemens’ Global Center of Competence Cities. “The C40 City Climate Leadership Group is one of the major city organisations worldwide. It represents 63 cities that stand for about 20 per cent of the world’s GDP and this partnership allows Siemens to better interact with some of the most important cities on this planet, and support them in the fight against climate change.”

Winning Cities

The independent, seven-member judging panel - consisting of former city Mayors, architects and representatives of the World Bank, C40 and Siemens - had difficult choices to make but agreed on the ten winning city projects in the following categories:

· Bogota (Urban Transportation)

· Copenhagen (Carbon Measurement & Planning)

· Melbourne (Energy Efficient Built Environment)

· Mexico City (Air Quality)

· Munich (Green Energy)

· New York City (Adaptation & Resilience)

· Rio de Janeiro (Sustainable Communities)

· San Francisco (Waste Management)

· Singapore (Intelligent City Infrastructure)

· Tokyo (Finance & Economic Development)

Citizen’s Choice Award

The good news for the other finalist cities is that the awards process for 2013 doesn’t end here. C40 and Siemens announced the “Citizen’s Choice Award” that will allow the general public to vote for the project they believe should have won an award. The votes will be tallied at the City Climate Leadership Awards website and a winner will be announced in November. Vote at:

Following the inaugural C40 & Siemens City Climate Leadership Awards, which last week recognized 10 winning cities for their leadership in urban sustainability, C40 & Siemens are now kicking off the Citizen’s Choice Awards. Anyone can vote (only once though) in the Citizen’s Choice Award for any city project they like. To vote, visit this here page:
