Local Climate Solutions for Africa (LOCS4Africa)

In an urbanising world, where more than 50% of the population already lives in cities, addressing the effects of climate change at the local level is critical to saving lives and livelihoods as well as to advance social and economic well-being. In the global south, where many Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) remain elusive, there is a substantial risk that many hard-won development gains will be undermined. Urgent responses, through integrated planning and implementation, are required.

ICLEI Africa recognises that climate change and development are inseparably connected in a unique way on the African continent. The African continent is the world’s fastest urbanising region. It is also one of the most vulnerable to the impacts of climatic change. The continent is warming at double the global average, and the responding changes in rainfall and precipitation, in particular, are potentially devastating. The critical underpinning issues of food, water and energy security will define the development agenda in the coming years. While climate change threatens to undermine hard-won development gains, responding to it effectively will create new opportunities for job creation, sustainable service delivery and human development. African urbanism is also unique, and meeting development challenges in cities that are often informal, dynamic and changing is a challenge that will also be further exacerbated by climate change. Unique responses, African solutions and sharing of lessons on the continent are critical to successfully reimagining African urbanism.
