KwaDukuza Municipality capacitated through renewable energy workshop
A capacity building workshop was held in KwaDukuza Municipality last 19 February 2016 with the view of enhancing municipal understanding and benefits of renewable energy installations. This is part of their participation in the national Earth Hour City Challenge 2015-2016 Secondary Municipalities edition. The workshop was very well attended with much interest shown by a number of municipal departments, as well as representatives from neighbouring Msunduzi Municipality and the private sector.
The workshop included a background on the South African electricity landscape, the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REI4P), and different renewable energy sources. Case studies on Riversdale, Stellenbosch, Cape Town and Drakenstein were also presented, which demonstrated each municipality’s renewable energy generation potential using distributed energy generation.
Participants were also introduced to a tool and processes developed by Stellenbosch University, Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES) which assists entities to better understand the solar resource of their area. It calculates the implications that different installation options will have considering different tariff options.
The workshop will now be amplified with additional technical work on distributed energy that will address a key concern to be identified by the municipality.
