ICLEI’s African Waste Centre helps municipalities and private sector actors move from fragmented waste practices towards integrated, circular, and evidence-based waste systems. Grounded in the ICLEI 5R framework and two decades of delivery across the continent, we combine governance support, technical assistance and corporate advisory to strengthen waste services, unlock investment-ready projects, and reduce the public health and environmental risks of poor waste management. From municipal strategy and infrastructure planning to export-linked compliance and our flagship Beyond Burning Alliance to end open waste burning on the continent, we exist to turn one of Africa’s most pressing urban challenges into an opportunity for public health, economic value and environmental regeneration.
ICLEI Africa’s Clean Cooking Centre improves the lives of those living in informality through clean cooking. We enable clean cooking solutions to reach and serve underserved urban communities across Africa by strengthening local action, championing inclusive multi-level governance, and creating an enabling environment for partnerships between governments, communities, the private sector and development actors.
ICLEI Africa’s Sustainable Finance Centre (SFC), with like-minded partners across the world, is charting a new era of increased funding for subnational projects, ensuring we move from policy to practice. By playing the crucial and often under-resourced knowledge broker role, needed to bridge divides between crucial stakeholders, the SFC is ensuring that all actors involved in the project development value chain work in an integrated manner – increasing the success of local projects reaching implementation.

Putting food firmly on the urban sustainability agenda: We exist to elevate the role of cities and local governments in solving Africa’s food system challenges. This means healthier, more prosperous cities backed by sustainable rural value chains.
We aim to be the leading convener of urban food systems action in Africa and the go-to team of urban food systems professionals in the region. We support ICLEI’s global City Food program by bringing African experience into the international arena.
