ICLEI Africa is proud to welcome its newest member, Cape Winelands District Municipality. Cape Winelands is a prominent South African district located in the Cape Floristic Region, the smallest of the six recognised floral kingdoms of the world, as well as one of the most fragile. The district is home of more than 850 000 residents and includes five local municipalities; namely Drakenstein, Stellenbosch, Witzenberg, Breede Valley and Langeberg.
Cape Winelands is already highly involved in sustainable development, notably through the support of its Biosphere Reserve – a mosaic of diverse ecosystems and physiographic environments, and a gradation of land-uses and human settlement patterns associated with the world-renowned Cape Winelands viticultural landscape.
On behalf of its fellow African local governments, a warm welcome to the network. ICLEI Africa looks forward to working together to build a sustainable future.
