On 22 March 2014, Malawi joined many countries and cities across the world to commemorate the United Nations World Water Day.
This year’s theme focused on water & energy and aims to highlight the interlinking and interdependent nature of water & energy.
Malawi’s World Water Day celebrations took place at Misesa Primary School in Blantyre an event attended by the President of Malawi, Dr Joyce Banda. Among the key organisers of the event were the Government of Malawi, Parastatals and Non-Governmental Organisations namely; the Blantyre Water Board, Ministry of Irrigation and Water Development, Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Environment, Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority, ESCOM and others.
The day’s events centred on the theme of water and energy and sought to highlight water and energy links within the country including examining instances when water is used to generate electrical energy (Hydro-Electric Power) and in addition instances were electricity powers water pumps to channel water to several places of demand at the local level.
As part of the celebrations, President Banda officially opened the Soche Water Tank, one of three tanks to be used as reservoirs to reduce shortages of water supply in the surrounding areas. Further festivities that took place included traditional dances and other performances embracing the importance of water in generating energy and sustaining life on earth. Within the performances messages were heard, asking service providers such as ESCOM and the Water Board to improve on delivery of their services.
