Africa is the continent most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The 2018 IPCC Special Report calls for urgent and ambitious action to be taken to keep global warming below 1.5ºC

Research shows that 84 of the world’s 100 fastest-growing cities are at extreme risk from climate change, and that 79 of these are in Africa.

The Urban Low Emission Development Strategies (Urban-LEDS ll) project works with local governments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with the aim of limiting global warming to 1.5ºC. Urban-LEDS ll mainstreams climate action into existing policies, enhances multi-level governance, and improves capacity to develop and finance climate projects.

This infographic explores ways that African cities can limit global warming through:

  • Protecting and enhancing urban biodiversity
  • Optimising urban planning for reduced impacts from climate shocks
  • Implementing informed and contextual urban climate policy
  • Building capacity for mitigation and adaptation
  • Promoting climate-resilient infrastructure
  • Encouraging development of renewable energy sources
  • Reducing emissions from buildings
  • Supporting localised climate research
  • Implementing policies to shift to compact and pedestrian cities

The 2018 IPCC Special Report calls for urgent and ambitious action to be taken to keep global warming below 1.5ºC.

This is especially important in African cities, as the continent is the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Fortunately there are many opportunities for interventions that can achieve this goal and make our African cities truly resilient to both known and unexpected future shocks.
