Basse Area Council is the local government authority for the Upper River Region, the easternmost part of The Gambia, with its seat at Basse Santa Su on the south bank of the River Gambia. Long a crossroads of upriver trade between the coast and the interior, Basse is known for its bustling market and cross-border commerce, and the surrounding communities live largely from farming, livestock and river-linked trade. The opening of a bridge across the Gambia River in 2021 has strengthened the town's role as a regional hub, and the Council has invested in borehole water facilities for communities across the region.
