Established in 1965, Brikama Area Council covers the whole of the West Coast Region — 1 764 km² reaching from the Atlantic coast inland, some 30 km from Banjul. It is The Gambia's largest local government by population, spread across nine districts, 28 wards and roughly 260 villages, and accounts for a substantial share of the national population. Rapid urbanisation along the coastal corridor has made sanitation, waste management and service delivery the Council's defining challenges, and it has completed a Voluntary Local Review localising the Sustainable Development Goals with climate mitigation and adaptation among its stated priorities.
