Kinshasa is both a city and one of the DRC's 26 provinces, spread over some 9 965 km² on the southern bank of Pool Malebo, with the Congo River forming its western and northern boundary and Brazzaville directly opposite — the world's closest pair of capital cities. Administered through 24 communes, it is the country's political, industrial and cultural engine, home to its manufacturing, banking, telecommunications and music industries. It is also the largest nominally francophone urban area in the world, where French governs formal life and Lingala the street, and the city-province leads the “Kin Bopeto” urban cleanliness and sanitation campaign.
