ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Center attend RAMSAR Convention in Switzerland
ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability – Cities Biodiversity Center, attended the 52nd Meeting of the Standing Committee (SC52) of the RAMSAR Convention, which took place at the RAMSAR Secretariat Headquarters in Gland, Switzerland, during the week of 13th – 17th June 2016.
The mission of the RAMSAR Convention is “the conservation and wise use of all wetlands through local and national actions and international cooperation, as a contribution towards achieving sustainable development throughout the world”.
The SC52 represented an important milestone for the RAMSAR Convention as discussions included the implementation of Resolution XII.10: Wetland City Accreditation.
The RAMSAR Wetland City Accreditation aims to create a network of world wetland cities around the globe, to encourage a positive relationship between the cities and their wetlands by recognising communication, awareness raising and education activities, as well as the consideration of wetlands in planning and decision making processes. The Wetland City Accreditation also offers an opportunity for recognition of local governments demonstrating leadership in wetland management.
ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Center looks forward to its continued work with the RAMSAR Secretariat, to profile the valuable contribution that cities and sub-national governments around the world make towards protecting wetlands, in increasingly urban contexts.
