ABOUT

Member summary

Commune Ogou I covers Atakpamé, seat of the Ogou prefecture and capital of Togo’s Plateaux Region, a city set in a depression ringed by the seven hills that give it its nickname, with plains rising south-west to Mont Okélogbo. Positioned on the RN1 corridor between Lomé and the north of the country, it is an agricultural and commercial crossroads — food crops, tubers and cotton, the large Akpèssèmé cereal market, and a historic place in the colonial-era coffee and cocoa triangle with Kpalimé and Badou — while its Ifè and Ewe communities sustain traditions such as the Odon-Itsu yam festival and the Tchébé stilt dance. The commune lies in a Sudanian climate of increasingly irregular rainfall and contends with recurrent flooding, violent winds and periodic drought; in 2026 it adopted a local sanitation and waste-management policy with a roadmap to 2035, alongside a municipal disaster risk reduction plan covering risk mapping, early warning, waterway management and reforestation.
