The District Council of Black River serves the western district of Mauritius, running from Albion and Gros Cailloux in the north through Flic-en-Flac, Tamarin and Grande Rivière Noire to Chamarel, La Gaulette and Le Morne. It is among the island's largest districts by area but its smallest by population, and its driest, with a landscape of mountains, gorges, salt pans and long west-coast beaches. Tourism, deep-sea fishing and the natural draws of the Black River Gorges and the Chamarel coloured earths give the district a distinct character among Mauritian local authorities, and its waters were designated a Mission Blue “Hope Spot” for marine conservation in 2019.
