Mansakonko Area Council governs The Gambia's Lower River Region, some 1 618 km² of riverine lowland on the south bank of the River Gambia. Groundnuts are the region's principal cash crop, with rice grown on the alluvial flats and fishing supporting communities along the water. The Council is seated at Mansa Konko, a historic administrative centre whose name means “king's hill” in Mandinka.
