Masaka City lies in Uganda's Buganda Region, roughly 130 km south-west of Kampala and close to the Equator, on the trans-African corridor linking Uganda to Tanzania, Rwanda and the DRC. Granted city status in July 2020, it is organised into three divisions — Katwe-Butego, Kimaanya-Kyabakuza and Nyendo-Mukungwe. Long a coffee and agricultural trading hub for the surrounding countryside, Masaka combines a busy commercial core with a strong regional service role in health and education, and runs a Youth Climate Action Fund supporting locally designed climate projects led by residents aged 15 to 24.
