Mbale City sits in eastern Uganda's Bugisu sub-region at 1 156 m above sea level, some 225 km north-east of Kampala and around 48 km south-west of Mount Elgon, one of East Africa's highest peaks. Elevated to city status in July 2020 and organised into Industrial and Northern divisions, it is the administrative and commercial centre for its sub-region, served by the Tororo–Pakwach railway line and anchored by a regional referral hospital and several universities. Twinned with Pontypridd in Wales since 2005, the city is closely associated with the Mbale Trees Programme, a Wales–Mbale partnership that has planted more than 20 million trees around Mount Elgon.
