Divided into 16 village council areas, the Moka District is home to the University of Mauritius and several other notable educational institutes that make this region a center for cultural exchange and learning. As the only landlocked rural district in Mauritius, and nestled within mountain reserves, Moka is an example of living sustainably within nature. The district is paradise for nature enthusiasts, who can enjoy the cascades of Tamarind Falls and the biodiversity in the Mamelles Mountains. The name “Moka” was derived from Mocha (coffee) which was cultivated by the French during occupation.
