Boane sits on the left bank of the Umbeluzi River in Maputo Province, within the capital's wider metropolitan area. Raised to town status in 1987 and constituted as a municipality in 2013 under Mozambique's decentralisation reforms, it is served by a station on the Goba railway and anchored economically by the Beleluane industrial park alongside a strong agricultural hinterland. Its position between the Umbeluzi valley and greater Maputo makes it both a food-producing district and a fast-growing peri-urban centre, where the municipality works with national government on localising the Sustainable Development Goals and promoting conservation agriculture.
