Project summary

Emphasising Ecosystems, Elevating People (3EP) is employing a bottom-up approach to the rediscovery, regeneration, and protection of Nairobi’s natural assets throughout the river system. By Emphasising Ecosystems, Elevating People, it will contribute to the city-wide Nairobi River Life Project, a multi-actor, interdisciplinary initiative which aims to reclaim and regenerate Nairobi’s three main rivers through public, private, and civil society partnerships. By demonstrating replicable models for the upscaling of EbA, this project will catalyse action throughout Kenya and beyond, positioning communities and local governments to address the growing challenges of climate risk, urbanization, and the loss of natural assets more comprehensively. Key components of the project include basin-wide assessments, multi-stakeholder visioning processes, the co-production of “Rivers + People” (R+P) plans with communities in informal settlements, and the implementation of catalytic, community-driven climate adaptation pilots.

Project aims

  1. Strengthen local capacity for sustainable river management
  2. Build a shared, inclusive vision for the Ngong River Basin
  3. Advance neighbourhood-level planning
  4. Deliver catalytic NbS demonstrations
