African Water Adaptation through Knowledge Empowerment

In an era of significant urbanisation trends on the continent, business-as-usual methods of supplying water and sanitation services to African cities is unlikely to be sufficient. Climate change impacts projected for Africa provide further impetus for finding innovative ways and means of supplying water and sanitation services to Africa’s growing urban population.
Recognising that small-scale, home-grown, climate-friendly technology and infrastructure has the potential to play a role in addressing this need, the AWAKE project aims to enhance and share knowledge on the opportunities and constraints that city stakeholders in southern African city regions might face in upscaling their ideas.

Outcomes of the project include:

  1. A knowledge sharing event and official project launch at ICLEI’s Local Climate Solutions for Africa (LoCS4Africa) congress in March 2017
  2. Baseline Assessment Reports which summarise the status quo in terms of global and African water and climate change issues, and contextualise the opportunities for and constraints to the adoption of climate-friendly adaptation technologies for each of the city regions
  3. A peer-reviewed, open access research paper to be submitted to an international journal and
  4. A policy brief aimed at sharing knowledge, lessons learnt and good practice to a diverse audience.

Funding partners
AWAKE is funded through the African Climate Technology and Finance Centre and Network (ACTFCN) which is hosted by the African Development Bank (AfDB). The ACTFN is part of a United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Global Environment Facility (GEF) initiative to establish regional climate technology and finance centres with regional multilateral development banks. It is financed by the GEF Trust Fund (GEFTF) and the Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF). The objective of the ACTFCN is to support sub-Saharan African (SSA) member countries in scaling-up the deployment of low-carbon and climate resilient technologies for climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Implementing partners

ICLEI Africa has partnered with the University of Cape Town’s Climate Systems Analysis Group, ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability – World Secretariat and Grue & Hornstrup to deliver the AWAKE project.
