Reflecting Cities

The Reflecting Cities project, supported by the Robert Bosch Stiftung, provides African cities with spaces for reflection and inter-city learning to assist them in engaging with the complex urban planning challenges they have identified.
ICLEI Africa’s Urban Natural Assets (UNA) programme has taught us that a major limitation to the successful planning and implementation of nature-based solutions in complex urban environments within Africa is a lack of time set aside for reflection. This includes reflection on the current state of the city, visualising potential futures, and experimenting with new approaches for urban planning and action.

The Reflecting Cities project is integrated into the broader UNA programme, aiming to build on existing UNA projects by creating a reflective and engaging space for three UNA cities (Lilongwe, Kampala and Entebbe), as well as Blantyre, to have open, fair and robust discussion on the future of urban planning in Africa.

Reflecting Cities: Connecting for sustainability

The 2019 Reflecting Cities: Connecting for sustainability project, a one year initiative, aims to provide local governments with:

  • The space for networking and inter-city learning;
  • Access to experts, facilitators and thought-leaders to assist in co-developing innovative urban planning approaches within African cities;
  • A space for reflection and dialogue;
  • Tools and processes for unpacking a specific planning case study, to articulate the specific challenges, opportunities, outcomes and feedback involved, so as to design effective solutions; and
  • A roadmap that outlines a process for sustaining the discussions, learnings and solutions which emerge throughout the project.
