ICLEI Member hosts C40 Mayors Summit

On 13 March 2013, Mayor Bloomberg of New York and Mayor Mpho Parks Tau of Johannesburg announced that ICLEI member the City of Johannesburg was to be the fifth host of the biennial C40 Cities Mayors Summit.

The Summit, to be held 4-6 February 2014, will see hundreds of international urban and climate change leaders come together to explore urban solutions to combat the effects of climate change.

The Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40), under the chairmanship of Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York, focuses on tangible actions to combat global climate change from the urban context. The 3-day-event typically involves a range of outcome-focused working sessions and roundtable meetings, with Mayors, their staff, and technical experts.

Cities now contain over 50% of the world’s population, concentrated in a small and crucial area, and generate over 70% of humanity’s carbon emissions. The C40 Mayors Summit therefore focuses on developing and implementing innovative urban solutions to the world’s most urgent challenges regarding climate and resources.

Mayor of Johannesburg Councilor Mpho Parks Tau highlighted Africa’s readiness to address climate action during the announcement event, saying “It will be a historic moment for Johannesburg – but also for South Africa and the African continent. Hosting the event is a clear recognition of the growing role that Africa, and the global South, can play to find solutions to the most pressing issues facing our globe.

Climate change is not an issue that affects only the industrialised countries of the northern hemisphere. It is an everyday reality for the people of Africa in rapidly expanding cities, as well as rural areas faced by the consequences of dramatic changes in weather patterns, resulting in threats to crops and livestock and their ability to survive.”

The City of Johannesburg, a long-term ICLEI member, has distinguished itself in its commitment and concrete work towards conserving its environment and combating climate change.
