UN Conference on Desertification 2013

The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Conference of Parties Eleven (COP11) was held in Windhoek, Namibia, from 16-27 September 2013.

Land degradation is a pertinent issue to biodiversity, with around 27,000 species lost each year due to land degradation. During the conference, the European Commission highlighted that '60% of global ecosystems that provide food, feed and fiber are degraded’ highlighting that more effort must be made to reverse ecosystem loss by arresting land degradation and restoring degraded ecosystems.

As a side event to the COP11, the Rio Convention Pavilion – which brings together the three ‘sister’ conventions on Biodiversity, Climate Change and Desertification – hosted an Ecosystem Restoration Day, presenting experiences of investing in ecosystem restoration through sustainable land management, and the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel Initiative (GGWSSI).

Entering the second week of discussions, the COP11 will focus on ways to combat land degradation that directly affects 1.5 billion people globally.
