HEAT Plus tool launched at Rio Conventions Pavilion in Durban

The HEAT + (Harmonized Emissions Analysis Tool) software – a tool to help cities manage energy and emissions - was recently launched at the Rio Conventions Pavilion at the UNFCCC Cop 17 in Durban, South Africa.

The Rio Conventions Pavilion is a platform for raising awareness and sharing information on the latest practices and scientific findings to do with the implementation of the three Rio Conventions on biodiversity, climate change and desertification.

The tool was launched by the President of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, David Cadman in the presence of ICLEI’s Deputy Secretary General Gino van Begin, regional director of ICLEI Africa, Kobie Brand, executive director of ICLEI South Asia, Emani Kumar, Mexico country office director Edgar Villasenor, and manager of ICLEI’s Cities Climate Center Yunus Arikan. ICLEI representatives were joined by city mayors from around the world, including James Nxumalo, the Mayor of eThekwini Municipality in Durban.

HEAT + is ICLEI’s newest software management tool, designed to help local governments address climate change by accessing the benefits of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and common air pollutants. The software provides tools for planning mitigation actions in cities, based on a detailed inventory of GHG and CAP emissions. It also offers secure data storage, a global data bank, comprehensive technical support and accessibility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Broadly, HEAT + will help local governments:

-Build a simple emissions forecast
-Set a target for reducing emissions
-Build an emissions inventory based on local energy use, transportation demand, waste practices, and related factors
-Account and report local GHG emissions via revised global climate change guidelines
-Quantify GHG emission reduction
-Develop, report and track progress made sustainably
-HEAT + is now found in seven countries – India, Philippines, Korea, South Africa, -Europe, Brazil and USA- and is available in English, Filipino, Korean, Portuguese, -French and Spanish.

The Rio Pavilion made a fitting platform for the launch of HEAT + tool, as the software has significant potential in helping local governments achieve global climate norms and goals.
