Durban Adaptation Charter at the Resilient Cities 2014

The recently concluded Resilient Cities 2014 Congress held in Bonn, Germany, provided the platform for significant developments to the Durban Adaptation Charter.

New signatories committed to the Durban Adaptation Charter (DAC) during the high-level Mayors Adaptation Forum. These are:

• Moulvibazar, Bangladesh
• Singra, Bangladesh
• Surrey, Canada
• Santiago, Chile
• Bogotá, Colombia

Closing the special event, ICLEI Vice President and Mayor James Nxumalo of eThekwini Municipality also gave an intervention as Co-Patron of Resilient Cities 2014, and in his role as ICLEI Chair of the Adaptation and Risk Reduction Portfolio in the ICLEI Africa Committee:

“We need to ensure that the adaptation needs of cities are included in any global agreements, and we support the pursuance of a stand-alone urban sustainable development goal… Development should bring economic opportunities whilst reducing the climate change risks faced by city residents”

As the annual reporting platform for the DAC, a feedback report on activities for the year 2013 was also presented at the Resilient Cities Congress. Among the highlights include the south-south knowledge exchange trips that the DAC has facilitated for ICLEI members City of Dar es Salaam and eThekwini Municipality. The year also saw the expansion of DAC through outreach missions with ICLEI to potential key partners in North America. In addition to a review, the report also provides insights on the future direction that the DAC will take.
