ABOUT

Member summary

Located on the eastern coast of Mauritius, Flacq District Council (FDC) is the largest district in the country and one of its most dynamic local authorities. With an estimated population of 138,460 (2018), Flacq is known for its natural beauty, agricultural heritage, and growing focus on sustainable rural and coastal development.

The district comprises 23 village councils and is governed by 18 councillors, elected every six years by local residents. The Council is led by Chairperson Mr. Chandra Dev Bundhoo (term: May 2024 – present), who oversees political leadership, while the Chief Executive manages the Council’s administration and day-to-day operations.

Mauritius follows a three-tier local government system — consisting of municipal councils, district councils, and village councils — established through the Local Government Act of 1988. This framework aims to decentralize power, enhance community participation, and ensure that local authorities play an active role in delivering essential services such as waste management, road maintenance, and environmental conservation.
