The Climate Summit of Local and Regional Leaders will be held on 12 November in Bonn, Germany, and is the premier gathering of local and regional governments at COP23. It is the jumping off point for key initiatives and partnerships that support implementation of the Paris Agreement, demonstrating that when cities, regions, businesses, communities and all levels of government join forces, it makes climate action stronger and more effective. This is critical in every part of the world, and particularly in climate vulnerable areas of the Global South and in small island developing nations (SIDS).

The Summit Dialogues includes eight consecutive days of heightened activity by local and regional governments to shape messages delivered to nations and other climate stakeholders. Taking place from 8 to 15 November, before and after the Climate Summit of Local and Regional Leaders, the Dialogues feature meetings, events and interactions with negotiators, laying the foundation for new initiatives, platforms and declarations to come out of Bonn.

Africa Day will be hosted at the Cities and Regions Pavilion on Thursday 9 November and will include the following sessions:

  • What do African local governments need to be able to contribute to the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)?
  • Future Energy Scenarios for African Cities
  • Cities’ Climate Action in Africa: the example of the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa.

REGISTER: If your city would like to join, please register online at http://www.cities-and-regions.org/registration/

FUNDING: When you register on the link above, please indicate if any funding might be required for Mayors to attend. If funding is provided it will be a reimbursement and could include an economy class flight ticket and four night’s accommodation, but no per diem. All other costs will be for the account of the municipality. The sponsor has specific terms and conditions that need to be met and these will be communicated if funding approval is granted. Preference will be given to ICLEI members in good standing.

LOGISTICS: Accommodation is limited and any interested parties are advised to make their own logistical arrangements as early as possible. It is advisable to get a cost estimate for a flight ticket to speed up the approval process.
