World Portable Sanitation Day – Today!

top right mosaic bottom left mosaic
Globally 2.6 billion people lack access to basic sanitation. In addition, approximately 200 million people per year are victims of disasters which impede access to existing sanitation facilities.

As the sphere of government closest to the people, local governments are often responsible not only for sanitation service delivery, but also the first line of response and defense in the event of disasters. Ensuring that communities have access to adequate sanitation is thus of key importance to local governments.

World Portable Sanitation Day will be launched on 15 August 2014 and will be an annual event to raise awareness of the need to expand access to sustainable sanitation, preventing the spread of disease and improving quality of life which is a critical challenge for many African cities.
