In 2001 participants of the World Toilet Summit in Singapore gathered to develop an annual global call to action to celebrate the world’s existing sanitation facilities and to highlight the need for improved and safe sanitation, particularly in developing countries.
The theme of the 2014 campaign is “Equity and Dignity”. The Organization hopes that this punchy slogan will assist in driving improved sanitation facilities for the 1 billion people worldwide still practice open defecation and the 2.5 billion people globally that do not have access to improved sanitation.
Through AWASLA, ICLEI Africa as one of the founding partners is driving cities to improve sanitation facilities to provide safe, sustainable sanitation in our urban areas.
