BEYOND BURNING ALLIANCE

Taking action to stop open burning of waste in Africa

Vision

The Beyond Burning Alliance empowers stakeholders to build an Africa where communities are healthier, cleaner, and more prosperous, and where open burning of waste is eliminated by 2040 through collaboration, equitable service delivery, and shared knowledge.

WHAT IS THE BEYOND BURNING ALLIANCE

The Beyond Burning Alliance brings together organisations, governments, practitioners, and researchers, from across Africa to address the environmental, socio-economic, and public health impacts of open waste burning.

The Alliance was established in response to the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment Resolution 18/1(b), which calls for the phase-out of open burning of waste across the continent by 2040.

In 2025, the Africa Roadmap for Transformative Action to End Open Burning of Waste was endorsed by AMCEN, providing a shared framework for locally driven and context-specific action. Building on this momentum, the Beyond Burning Alliance supports collaborative efforts to strengthen awareness, knowledge-sharing, policy engagement, capacity, financing, and sustainable waste solutions across Africa.

Through partnership and collective action, the Alliance aims to support healthier communities, resilient local economies, and cleaner urban environments where human and environmental well-being are prioritised.
